Msn connects, But Internet browsing doesn't

Not sure if this is the right place for the question, but here goes.

When using the net at home I have many instances where I can connect to MSN, but if I try to open up a browser, I cannot connect to the net. My understanding is that it's to do with the ports, and Virgin might be blocking the port I do my browsing through - this is all too techy for me.

If I reboot my modem, it generally does the trick, although I sometimes need to reboot about 4-5 times or so.

Are there some settings on my laptop that I can change to fix this problem? I am running Windows 7.

Thanks in advance for all your responses.
