Also it might improve performance a little instead of going through an isolator and then another cable and then to the modem...one less wire...

What do you mean "all it does is protect from surges"? If you have a lightning strike and your VM supplied (and owned) equipment gets fried then you will be liable. Don't mess with their installation as you are breaking the terms of your contract and possibly creating a dangerous situation. If you ignore the advice of Seph, and others who know what they are talking about, then that shows a serious lack of commonsense.
