Don't touch and report it to VM - It's their network and you shouldn't be playing with it! What made you 'look' to see if the old cable was live?
If the network is affected it's up to them to fix it, at their cost, and you sticking a termination on it may actually make things worse depending on if the term is truly 75R or not...
