with regards to your setup. firstly the SH does suck* so if your willing to invest in a decent router i'd do it. in the mean time whats your desktop specs, laptop specs?

Speeds over wireless will always vary and depend on your network card.

I consistantly hit 100Mb over direct ethernet connection but on my laptop never get over 70Mb and iPad is lower again.
