The contention point is surely the optical node and that is virtually always within half a mile or so as it gets fed by coax which needs an amp every few hundred meters. The same set of channels almost certainly are used 10 miles away but they aren't using my capacity as my traffic won't be on them just as those people's traffic won't be on mine. Surely you can't believe that my 45.8MHz upstream is shared with everybody else in the country who happens to be on the same frequency?
