I would have done exactly the same as he did if i was in the same situation
I know the Law is different in the US but looking at the story then the crucial part is that there appears to be no intent to kill the rapist - it looks like he happened to suffer a fatal blow as part of a struggle - even the conversation with the police looks like he was worried that he was going to die. If he had shot him then the case would have been all about whether he picked the shotgun up before he hunted for the rapist, or whether he happened to have it on him at the time, or whether deadly force includes shooting people.

I would have done the same.
