Advice on changing service provider with old phone

OH and I thought we would give VM mobile a go as we will be able to phone our mobiles from home and we are both presently with o2 and the signal is very poor where my OH works.

So phoned up and ordered 2 PAYG Sim Cards but for two reasons don't want to put them in our existing phones at the moment and had hoped to use them in our old o2 phones and just get our current phones swapped over to VM if we are happy with the signal and once we have used up all the credit on our current phones.

However have just plugged the old phones in and realised it's been nearly a year since they were used, so they've obviously been deactivated.

Have no idea how to get them reactivated or if it's even possible. It seemed a good idea to just use an old phone for now to test our how VM mobile is before going through all the hassle of changing providers on our current phones and then possibly having to change them again if we weren't happy.
