Help wiring cat6 "A" socket to cat5e patch panel

I have been installing a small wired network in a to-be workroom using "dado trunking". The wire and wall sockets are all cat6 and I chose the T568A variant wiring. The wires all go to a 12-way cat5e patch panel built into the trunking.

My problem is that I can't work out which wires to connect. Belatedly, considering the "A" choice, I noticed the T568B notice on the panel, but figured I could just swap the orange & green pairs and all would be well.

However when I tested it with the test meter instead of the tester lights going 1..8 on each end as expected, on the remote end they jumped all over the place. So I figured I'd got it wrong and started again at the panel end. This time I connected it exactly as the colour key indicated. I get:

1..8 maps to 3,6,1,4,5,2,7,8

which doesn't seem right!

Can anyone help sort me out?

Thanks in advance,
Ruth
