Yes but would the players I mentioned be happy with being back up. Who do you see as the regular pairing of Vermaelen, Koscielny, Vertonghen and Mertesacker? Mertesacker could be back up, fair enough. However would Vertonghen be happy with that? I suspect not. I would really not want to displace Koscielny, our second best defender after Sagna IMO, either.
So it's difficult to see Wenger paying £10 million plus wages to create that problem....

Unless we find a place to play all three then I don't see us buying him. (Vertonghen can play as a defensive midfielder, or since Vermaelen likes to push forward he could go there).
