The more HMG tries to 'think' for people the less people think for themselves. If all official comment on everything potentially dangerous (or otherwise important) is going to have to be simplified to suit the lowest common denominator in the intelligence stakes then I'm afraid many of us are in for a very boring and frustrating time.
I simply don't buy this guff that what was said encouraged people to be stupid. Stupid people don't need encouragement to practice their craft and don't tend to listen to ministers too avidly. The last time we had petrol shortages people did exactly the same thing and started filling up jerry cans and all sorts of other things (without any persuasion from the likes of Francis Maude) and every year people get burned throwing petrol and other stuff on BBQs, bonfires etc. without advice from anyone else. Sorry but some people are just stupid and no amount of learned advice will change them because they're too stupid to listen to it in the first place.
