It is possible that they got rid of them as part of their risk asessment, on the grounds of it being a possible fire risk. But as long as a fire isn't likely to impede people from reaching an emergency exit, then I can't see it being an issue.

Then there is the possibility that they have done it because it looks untidy. Or even because bags have advertising on them, but boxes don't.
