Well it is a pretty poor laptop, but actually internet access and multimedia capabilities
are selling points for computers and computer companies
do make money from selling products which can access ad supported services, but I have software which means I don't see any of the ads you suggest might be bypassed by Tivo, so actually the only people who make anything out of me streaming live news from a website are those who sold me the computer and those who provide my broadband service. In fact, the result of using a computer or a Tivo would be exactly the same in the scenario I describe and if anything, a deal with Virgin might mean I have to be exposed to the ads which support them, something which very definitely is not the case on a computer.
