Part of the problem was of course, that I couldn't connect even with the green lights all on. I could see it, but I couldn't connect to it.
What's the reasoning behind having to do the full reset anyway?
edit: My Netgear WNR2000 was 192.168.1.1 by the way.

In normal operation the are no orange light except when initialising the should be no need to do the pinhole reset on a new router but if you did it is of little consequence, normally the DIR615's have a good range you could improve it cheaply with a couple of these for under £3.20 in total
