Since I didn't even start this argument about what is and isn't free, clearly there's at least one other English speaking person who disagrees. I stand by my claim that there's no such thing as a free lunch. Yes, you're getting more than what you're currently paying for and yes there's no additional charge, but as someone has already pointed out, Virgin is not a charity, they're not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. Either it's being paid for by the money you've been paying Virgin all this time, or they're extracting the money that the upgrade costs in some other way - future monthly costs, new customers, customer loyalty, etc.
As I have said numerous times so far, I feel it's a good thing and I am in no way complaining - I'm happy to get the upgrade and I don't know why anyone wouldn't be (apart from perhaps those in over-subscribed areas who fear it might make things worse), I'm merely saying that it's not as simple as saying "Free upgrade - hurrah!".
Notice that it has been announced during Q1 of the year, which is notoriously Virgin's worst quarter for subscriber loss each year. In fact, I think only once in the last 4 or 5 years has Virgn actually gained customers. Ulterior motives and all that.
