As someone has already said, there is absolutely no issue regarding copyright infringement here because I can already play any of my recordings on my Tivo and record them directly on to a DVD. It's just that I want the HD quality rather than the SD quality.
There is no copyright problem with downscaled SD copies of HD programmes, but recording to a blu-ray in HD creates a lossless copy, and this is particularly what the Hollywood studios don't like. This is why there are no HDMI inputs on the new blu-ray recorders and HDCP introduced to 'prevent' copying.
