Another thing they do is to use mixed mode channels, so a DOCSIS 1.1 modem will burst onto the channel at 16QAM, symbol rate 2.56Msym/s while a DOCSIS 2 or higher modem bursts at 64QAM, symbol rate 5.12Msym/s. The CMTS splits the modems between those that registered in each mode and changes the upstream type dynamically for their transmit periods.

Y'know, you've got me so distraught with the state of VM's network and their incompetancies that I sometimes forget there are other cable operators out there that actually have sensible and intelligent deployments...
P.S. So you say the actual physical upstream uplift upgrades have been completed in your area then. Any signs of it showing up on your modem? (I think I've mentioned I had a 3x.x Mhz upstream running for a few hours a month or two ago but nothing since)
