Surely it can't be a copyright issue if I can already copy it off the Tivo on to a DVD?

Has anyone tried one of these or similar? It seems crazy that we would have to spend all this money to get the exact same file on to our PCs that already exists on the Tivo. How can it be a legal issue when we can end up with exactly the same file legitimately if we use one of these devices?
