The other one is for non-DOCSIS 2 CPE, probably older EMTAs.
Another thing they do is to use mixed mode channels, so a DOCSIS 1.1 modem will burst onto the channel at 16QAM, symbol rate 2.56Msym/s while a DOCSIS 2 or higher modem bursts at 64QAM, symbol rate 5.12Msym/s. The CMTS splits the modems between those that registered in each mode and changes the upstream type dynamically for their transmit periods.

Even if I worked for VM it would be in an engineering role and string pulling would be limited to discrete enquiries as to how things are going.
I should be upgraded but it was cocked up so it's late, it was taking ages anyway as VM had 3 months of work to do in this area and didn't start it until August, completing it in October if I remember.
