Setting up router (Netgear) problem

I'm trying to help a friend set-up a Netgear N150 WNR1000v2 router. He's on Virgin broadband, via a cable modem.

Firstly the setup CD wouldn't load (even though when I tested it later it worked on mine) so had to use the "No CD Drive" option from the manual.

I typed the address given in the manual (http://www.routerlogin.net) into the browser but it redirected to a Netgear support webpage for finding your model, rather than the page advertised in the manual, which shows a pop-up box for entering user name and password.

I also tried the IP number address of 192.168.1.1 (as seen on internet) but this took ages and then had a Gateway - timed out error.

All the time we were trying to get wireless set-up we were able to get on the internet OK, so the internet connection was live. Connections were ethernet from back of cable modem to router, and then one from there into PC.

Can anyone suggest how to get this login page up? Thanks.
