Yes, it's sad but true: no TiVo, no PVR, no HD. I have taken a stance over the past ten years or so of no longer being an early adopter or having the latest model of anything. Although I've mostly avoided problems myself, I've seen too many cases of people getting burned that way in recent years.
- My in-laws bought a Sony HD-ready TV a few years ago but the built-in FreeView tuner is MPEG-2 and so can't receive FreeView HD since the specification was changed to MPEG-4.
- Millions of people bought iPhones and iPads only to find that an 'S' or similar suffixed model was released shortly afterwards with a feature-set that should have been in the original (what I'd call 'beta') release with no upgrade path for existing owners.
- The iPhone 4 had antenna problems which should not have made it out the door at Cupertino (or is it Cheapertino, PRC these days?).
So, I wasn't about to pay an up-front charge for a TiVo only to find I was an unpaid tester for the hardware, software, delivery mechanisms, features and content. Nor was I going to get stuck with an MPEG-2 TV or the Betamax / Video 2000 / HD DVD equivalent of a 3D TV. I'll wait until the technology has settled, maybe later next year.
Having said that, I should at least have a PVR!
