In practice it does work fine in modem mode. I once advocated keeping the VMNG300, but given that it was reported to be working well and also future-proofed you for 8 channels and up to 400mb I didn't see the point of keeping the VMNG300.

However, less people would recommend the SH as a router right now. So if you do go for the SH make sure you have a gigabit router with at least 400Mb WAN to LAN throughput.
