thank you for your response. my apologies for multiple threads, i was unsure of where was best to post this topic.

the router is 2007 so nearly 5 years old. i was considering upgrading the firmware but was unsure as to whether the new router to be supplied by talk talk would be superior anyway so i will wait and see.

i'm sorry i forgot to mention that the new package will be ADSL 2+ so maybe that would affect the choice of router. i live 1.2 miles from my local BT exchange.

so an adsl filter between my rj11 line and the BT master socket will help as opposed to between the router and the rj11 extension line? sorry i should have been more specific.
