Well the issue is more down to the fact that it's a shared service, with relatively little upstream bandwidth available on each UBR - uploading affects pings dramatically.
I've had pretty good experience with BE when I had a BT line - around 19ms pings, but having said that, I often get as low as 10-15ms on Virgin Media, and rarely above 30. I'm not a heavy gamer, but I play WoW and it works just fine
