Exclamation & Wi-Fi Strength on Smartphones

I'm using a very up to date Android smartphone, (released in the UK like 3weeks ago) Motorola Defy Plus and I don't know if it's a Superhub 'feature' or perhaps a design of the phone, but I notice that wi-fi drops off incredibly quickly, to the point that one room away from the router (lets say 20 ft max) and the signal is degraded by a good 50% to, going upstairs where it will struggle to get 1 bar of signal.

Anyone else with a smartphone & superhub? for all I know that's the kind of range to expect on a phone's wi-fi receiver. It does seem pretty poor though.
