I can't say i've ever watched it either, perhaps many people haven't, so VM want to dump it. Can VM collate data on their customers' viewing habits, individually or anonymously?

That's a reasonable possibility, especially as ITV have asked for permission to use VM technology to insert adverts into their VM version of ITV Player.
Perhaps, VM didn't want to pay extra for the HD variants, but will be obtaining income from the extra ad sales and use of VM technology at no charge as a return for their pay HD channels instead
Today is the 15th, they may have decided to prefer to launch them all together and Tue/Wed night is a usual night for adding channels...
