Of course you should be able to get the recording off the hard drive to play on whatever device you choose, whenever you choose. That you can't is a serious problem with Tivo, IMHO.

You seem to think that because you have paid a subscription to view a program you own it, you don't you have licenced a viewing of it, just like legally if you buy a xbox game you don't own the the game, you have purchased a licence to play it and that is the reason you can't transfer it off the hard drive because you don't own it. (Theretically speaking you don't own it if you physically buy the dvd or the game, you just have a licence to use it, reselling films and games under the current licence usage is actually illegal, its like subletting a rented room).
