There really isn't much to say to that. One of many horrific crimes you eventually have to push to the back of your head because it's too difficult to process the pain and sadness involved for him and his family.
People can commit such evil acts due to hatred and ignorance. I would say that homosexuality is more accepted now than it was then, so there is some progress. There are however still people who can't handle difference and think they somehow have a right to tell others how to live their lives.
