Ok. We really need to be able to address Germany outside of a context involving Hitler or WW2. It was over 60 years go, let it go....

(As for France, they had the disadvantage of being on the front line and landlocked with Germany. We had the considerable advantage of the English Channel, a Soviet distraction and even then we weren't exactly having an easy time of it before America joined in).
