I connected the supplied ethernet cable from router to modem and set up Wifi on my laptop which works fine but I then lose internet on my PC and if I put it back on my PC I lose internet on my laptop. My PC is pretty old and has no ethernet ports to connect it directly to my new router, just the LAN one to my modem - is this essential for it to work?? Or is it something to do with the IP addresses? I bought a USB to ethernet adapter but couldn't set it up as I get a Code 39 error on my PC but that is for another forum!! If someone can tell me basically how I should set up I would be really grateful.
Have you plugged the cable from the modem into the correct socket on the router? It should be in the socket marked WAN, If you do not have a WAN socket you may have the wrong type of router. Make sure you switch everything off before connecting any cables and then back on once connected.
