It does sound as if there is a problem with the output from the box, my daughter has a 37" LG and the picture I find very harsh even on HD ( they have a standard V HD box) and have never tried to adjust the picture settings on the LG) It usually viewed about the same distance as you (I assume you meant feet not inches as you wrote
