I use H70's, which have been great for me.
Pretty much easy to setup, as long as you are not scared about putting the brackets on the motherboard from underneath the CPU socket.
When you said you didn't have to replace the back plate, do you mean an older cooling bracket? or the standard CPU bracket?
But yeah with one of those and a decent Nvidia 460/560 your system can be quiet as a mouse while on full load
