I don't really know what to do in regards to returning or not. Hd is great sd is truly awful. It's just fuzzy. If I watch it from twice the distance then it looks ok. Up close and it's not good at all.

You want to set it to panel, that way it's not stretching the picture to fill the screen on some of the lower bitrate channel. With that setting on those channels TiVO has a better picture that V+.
Also what output resolution have you got set? 720p or 1080i?
Another thing worth looking at with your sammy is post processing. Have you got it on? Have you tried it turned off?
On the fix front, VM and TiVo have a fix coming that basically fixes the up scaling for 1080i and is due out this year at some time.
When I got my TiVo (changed from a SA V+) I thought I had some sort of eye condition happen over night! Within a week I couldn't see a problem (the mind is an amazing thing). Now I don't have a problem.
