It's possible that there's a channel limitation. Laptops bought in the US won't be able to see anything on channel 12 or 13, as they only allow up to 11 over there.

300mbps wireless uses two bonded channels, e.g. 4 + 2 would be the main channel is 4 and the additional channel 2 is used to double speed (in fact, it's actually the centre frequencies listed but regardless, you get the idea).
