IMO that basically means we're looking at 18+ months of time VM had to create the "one box to replace them all" solution not counting other stuff they've rolled out like the regular hub.

What has made you assume that Virgin Media begun designing the Superhub right after the VMNG300 was released with the 50Mbit product? They might have started thinking about it well before then, or a long time after.
The two projects aren't connected.
