downloading the 1 GB file; the only way to possibly achieve even near to what ic an normally download from websites is using 'download them all' plugin on firefox which is set to download from 16 concurrent connections

VM is just inherently bad at delivering your full pipe speed over one connection, no surprises there, but obviously some sites will be worse affected than others.
