In XP, network icon can be displayed in system tray - Control panel- Network connections - properties tick box to display icon in system tray. This option isn't there in Win7.

OP does make it clear if he is missing this icon or if network device not showing in device manager. Sorry, just read posts again, not showing in device manager mentioned later.
