I checked some BGP documentation after I was given the phrase.
What I read told me it means it will get used if an alternate route with higher preference is not available. If traffic uses the route regardless of availability then it would suggest the depreferencing is useless

maybe I have misunderstood it again.
Your old rdns info means I should disable hostname resolving next time I check routes so I can compare the ip's instead of looking for a matching hostname.
