Please stop talking about fibre optic when you talk about Virgin Media. The final path on Virgin Media is coaxial. I don't know where any fibre optic terminates, if it terminates locally at all.

FTTC terminates at a local cabinet and then over copper pair to the home.

I see no real difference, it's the internet itself that makes a difference, i.e. the link between you and other gamers/the gaming server.

In my experience, VM is a big consumer provider and they're not going to be great on their backhaul due to their scale. Be would be the best ADSL bet.
