An engineer came round this afternoon to look into this issue and initially said that he would just need to re-synch the hdmi signals, but this turned out not to fix it. He then tried another Tivo box that he had in his van (having just uninstalled it after the customer decided not to keep it) and that did the same thing, proving that my box was not faulty.
He believes it may be a timing incompatibility between my JVC TV and the Tivo. He took all the details of the TV and my Tivo and said he would report the issue, in the hope that a resolution could be found such as a firmware revision that would cure the problem. So I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
In the meantime he found that just turning off the mains switch on the TV, rather than switching to standby got round the problem - a much better work-around than unplgging & replugging the cable each time.
