Sadly animal cruelty is common both here and overseas. When I was working in rural Tunisia the sight of donkeys tethered by their front legs was common. I came across one specimen whose front legs had obviously been tied together for years and the ropes had been in place for so long that they'd started to cut into the donkey's flesh. I couldn't bear the sight of this so naively cut the rope thinking that the donkey would at least be able to walk properly but immediately realised that it'd been tied up for so long that it couldn't even walk properly anymore. The locals thought I was mad....
