That's the way to do it. Walk at a pace between regular distances, e.g. lamposts, then ease off for the same distance.

I find setting your own goals increases motivation too. If you've got a smartphone try downloading the app from endomondo.com. You can track your "workouts", whether it's walking, cycling, running or a number of other sports... and track your own record. It's not 100% accurate but close enough if you're wanting to record your improvements.
