So, you are suggesting using an alternate device (and considerably more button presses) to replace functionality people apparently found useful and that VM could implement in a few lines of code? And that's not a step backwards in usability?

Not really. You don't remove features to improve something (unless they really don't work, but clearly reminders did), you attempt to add to those features.
