Kayfabe was the unwritten rule that wrestlers should maintain their characters / persona at all times to maintain the reality for fans. This has been relaxed somewhat in the past 15 years.
In the 1980's the NWA would put all of their heels (bad guys) in 1 hotel before a show and all the faces (good guys) in another. They wouldn't even allow them to travel on the same plane etc...
I don't watch wrestling these days but still admire it's colourful, gritty and often humorous history.
