There's nothing preventing the older standards (legacy, a, b, g) from using 5Ghz, though only 'a' does it by default. In fact, given 'a' comes before 'b' I'd postulate the 5Ghz band was introduced at the same time or before 'b'

As far as I can see both B and G are 2.4Ghz only, there is nothing in the spec that would allow them to use 5GHz
Didn't realise that 'a' was 5Ghz as have never come across any 'a' kit
So, I agree that 5Ghz doesn't technically have anything to do with 'n' but as 'n' was the first widely used standard to have the ability to use 5Ghz, it's understandable why it's associated with it
