I would agree with Kymmy. Normally the PC will tell you if there is an IP conflict on the network (LAN).

If it's your mates computer, check one of you are not using fixed IP - the same fixed IP. I use fixed IP but then I am the only one on my network, so can easily manage it.

DHCP should work around fixed IPs anyway.

I use Win7 with many other media devices strewn around the house and never had had a problem.
