Damn near impossible I'd say - instead of booting off the hard drive like US Tivos do it boots of flash memory so there's no scope for modifying it (it loads a kernel + a squashfs root and only touches the hard drive for /var and the MFS partition, and possibly /db).
I suspect but haven't proved it that if you put an empty hard drive in there it'll partition and initialise it itself, which is a bonus for upgrades (HD is 30% full already after 2 weeks, so I'm already eyeing up a 2Tb upgrade).
