Yup I think you are right.

IMO VM have, at considerable expense to themselves (I imagine), scored a mighty own goal with this ill conceived and implemented combined modem/router strategy.

Far from lessening the support burden and promoting sales, I fear, due to the bad publicity generated and the poorly implemented and limited feature set (many of which fail to work as expected), it may be having just the opposite effect.
