Or, people had no idea what a PVR was, and just didn't want TiVo? Enthusiasts read press releases - the general public don't. I don't ever recall anyone saying "don't buy a TiVo coz Sky have a better one coming next year", from the press/Sky or anyone I came into contact with (and I worked in the industry at the time).
I'd be interested to see how many Sky had shifted after their first 18 months to put the myth to bed that Sky completely ruined TiVo in any way other than launching a different product that suited people's needs better.

TiVo was £400 - both pricey products when a VCR could probably be had for less than half the price.
