Switching off the firewall doesn't sound like a particularly safe move to make, is it likely to have any detrimental effect on my PC?

The wireless card is an Atheros, but I'm having this problem with wired connection also (and the PC is only 4 days old so I'm hoping that the wireless care will be up to date!?)
