Overlap protection is used when all tuners are busy recording and another lower priority programme is due to be recorded. It ensures by clipping the recording times that no recordings are missed. When all tuners are being used on a Sky+ box it doesn't matter how dynamic the EPG is, you will find the following recording will be cancelled, it happened all the time when I had Sky. I do agree though that the live recording buffer implies that the EPG is not going to be as dynamic as people here are wanting though.

I would have thought that this is what the extended live recordings option is for

I for one think your both spot on. Also as you point out it does say "TiVo connects every few hours to update".
